Now let’s get started!

Types of Gold Jewelry Explained

What is Solid Gold Jewelry?

Solid gold jewelry refers to items made entirely from gold, without any other metals  mixed in. The purity of gold is measured in karats, denoted by the 'K' symbol.

Composition of different karats of gold commonly used in the USA:

24K Gold Jewelry (24 Karat): This is the purest form of gold available for jewelry. It consists of 99.9% gold and is highly malleable. While it's the most radiant and lustrous, its softness makes it less suitable for intricate jewelry pieces  that require durability.

22K Gold Jewelry (22 Karat): Comprising 91.7% gold and 8.3% other metals,  22K gold is slightly more durable than 24K gold. It retains a rich, deep color and  is commonly used in traditional and cultural jewelry.

18K Gold Jewelry (18 Karat): Consisting of 75% gold and 25% other metals,  18K gold strikes a balance between purity and durability. It's popular for fine  jewelry due to its enduring beauty and strength while retaining a high gold content.

14K Gold Jewelry (14 Karat): With 58.3% gold and 41.7% other metals,14K gold is a widely favored choice for jewelry in many parts of the world. It offers a  good blend of durability and affordability while maintaining a significant gold  content.

10K Gold Jewelry (10 Karat): This contains 41.7% gold and 58.3% other metals.  It's the most durable among gold jewelry options due to its lower gold content. It's  often used in more robust jewelry pieces.

What other metals are typically mixed in the solid gold?

The other metals mixed with gold (such as copper, silver, or zinc) are called alloys.  These are added to increase durability, enhance color, and provide strength to the solid gold jewelry piece.

Each karat of gold offers a unique blend of purity, strength, and color, allowing  individuals to choose based on their preferences for appearance, durability, and budget. The higher the karat, the more gold content in the jewelry, but it's essential to consider the trade-offs in terms of durability and wearability for everyday use.

Solid gold jewelry is an excellent investment

In my view, this is a great option if you want jewelry that lasts, looks  luxurious, and can be an investment. 14K gold and 18K gold are popular choices for  long-lasting jewelry. Solid gold doesn't just follow trends; it also keeps its value and can  even become more valuable over time. This makes it a wise investment. Solid gold is  more than just something you wear; it's something that can be passed down through generations. If you have the means to invest in high-quality, long-lasting jewelry that's also a symbol of luxury, this is an excellent choice.

What is Gold Filled Jewelry?

Gold filled jewelry is crafted by bonding a thick layer of solid gold alloy to a base metal  (usually brass or copper) using heat and pressure. This process creates a durable outer  layer of actual gold that's significantly thicker than gold plating.

Why gold filled jewelry is more durable than gold plated jewelry?

Typically, gold filled jewelry must contain at least 5% gold by weight and is often  marked as "GF" along with the karat of the gold used (e.g. 14K GF). The layer of gold in gold filled is much thicker than in gold plated jewelry pieces, making it  more resistant to tarnishing, fading, or wearing off over time.

Gold filled is a high quality budget-friendly alternative to solid gold.

The technique involves mechanically bonding the solid gold layer to the base metal, ensuring its longevity and durability. As a result, gold filled jewelry retains the luxurious look of gold at a more affordable price compared to solid gold pieces. It's an excellent option for those seeking high quality jewelry that's more budget-friendly yet maintains the beauty and durability of solid gold.

I deeply value the durability of gold filled jewelry, which mirrors the resilience of solid gold. It's a high ranking recommendation due to its lasting appeal and resistance to tarnishing, unlike gold plated or vermeil pieces, all without the steep cost of solid gold.

However, there are limitations when working with gold filled items. Techniques like  casting and finishing, possible with solid gold or gold plated base metals, aren't  applicable to gold filled jewelry. Nevertheless, there's ample space for creativity with  this medium with use of sheet metal, wire and findings.

What is Gold Vermeil Jewelry?

Gold vermeil jewelry is crafted by coating a sterling silver base with a thick layer of  gold through a process of electroplating. This process involves passing an electric current through a solution containing dissolved gold and attaching the gold  particles onto the surface of the base metal.

Minimum thickness of gold and sterling silver base composition of gold vermeil jewelry.

For an item to be classified as vermeil, it must meet specific standards: the gold layer should be at least 10 karats and have a minimum thickness of 2.5 microns. Additionally, the base metal—sterling silver—must be of high quality.

This process results in jewelry pieces that showcase the luxurious appearance of gold  while utilizing sterling silver as the base metal. Gold vermeil jewelry offers the  elegance of gold at a more affordable price point compared to solid gold pieces.

However, it's essential to note that due to the gold layer being thinner than that of gold filled or solid gold jewelry, gold vermeil items may require more care to preserve  their appearance over time.

In my opinion, gold vermeil jewelry is a nice choice and is an affordable option for  those seeking a precious metal style. If you're considering purchasing a gold vermeil piece, I recommend following our "How To Care For Your Jewelry" guide below. It includes valuable tips on storing and caring for your gold vermeil style.

What is Gold Plated Jewelry?

Gold plated jewelry refers to pieces made by covering a base metal (like brass or  copper) with a thin layer of gold through electroplating.

The layer of gold in gold plated jewelry is considerably thinner than in gold filled or gold vermeil jewelry pieces. Typically, it's measured in microns. Due to this thin layer, gold plated jewelry might tarnish or wear off over time, revealing the base metal underneath. However, it offers an affordable way to enjoy the look of gold without the  high cost associated with solid gold jewelry.

Gold plated jewelry is a stylish and budget-friendly option for occasional wear or fashion-forward pieces

Gold plated jewelry comes in various karats, like 14K or 18K, depending on the thickness of the gold layer. While it might not have the durability of solid gold or gold filled items, it can still be a stylish and budget-friendly option for accessorizing, especially for occasional wear or fashion-forward pieces. Proper care and maintenance can extend the life of gold plated jewelry, making it a versatile choice for those seeking a balance between affordability and aesthetics.

I'm drawn to plated jewelry for it's affordability and stylish appeal, providing a budget-friendly way to accessorize with elegance of gold. It's fantastic choice if you want to elevate your look without splurging on solid gold jewelry. However, I always caution to be mindful that its thin gold layer might wear off over time, especially with frequent wear or exposure to certain elements. While it's a good choice for occasional use and trendy pieces, I suggest my clients focus on gold filled jewelry or solid gold jewelry options for everyday wear to ensure longevity and retain it's aesthetic appeal. See below "How To Care For Your Jewelry" on preventative measures to take to prolong your gold plated jewelry styles.

How To Care For Your Jewelry

How to Care for Solid Gold Jewelry:

Clean regularly with mild soap and warm water, using a soft brush for intricate designs. An ultrasonic cleaner is an option, however if styles has precious  gemstones, please consult with your jeweler before using.

Store separately in a fabric-lined jewelry box to prevent scratches and tangles.

Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that may dull its shine.

Periodic professional cleaning and inspection can maintain its luster and integrity.

• Investing in a good jewelry cloth, is a great way to help maintain the sheen on your investment. We love Mayflower's Jewelry cloth or you can find something similar also on Amazon.

How to Care for Gold Filled Jewelry:

• Gently clean using mild soap and water, avoiding abrasive materials.

• Store in a dry, airtight container or zip to prevent tarnishing and scratches.

• Avoid exposure to moisture and chemicals, as they can cause the gold layer to  wear off over time.

• Use a soft cloth to polish and maintain its shine, and refrain from using harsh  cleaners.

How to Care for Gold Vermeil Jewelry:

Clean with a soft cloth after each wear to remove oils and dirt.

Keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals, perfumes, lotions, and sweat, as  these can accelerate tarnishing and wear off the gold layer.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its color.

Periodically use a polishing cloth designed for gold vermeil to restore its shine.

How to Care for Gold Plated Jewelry:

Clean gently using a soft cloth to avoid damaging the thin gold layer.

Keep your jewelry stored in a dry, airtight container or sealed bag to deter  premature tarnishing.

Avoid exposure to moisture, harsh chemicals, perfumes, lotions, and sweat, as  they can speed up tarnishing and cause the gold layer to wear off.

Refrain from using excessive polishing, as they may strip away the gold layer.

FAQ’s - Commonly Asked Questions About Gold Jewelry

1. Does gold filled jewelry tarnish?

Yes. Gold filled jewelry is more resistant to tarnishing compared to gold plated jewelry, but it can still tarnish under certain conditions. The outer layer of gold in gold filled jewelry is thicker than in gold plated jewelry, providing more durability and resistance to tarnishing for years or even decades to come with proper care.

While it's more resilient, it's still essential to take proper care of gold filled jewelry to prolong its shine and prevent tarnishing. Cleaning it gently with mild soap and water, storing it in a dry place away from moisture, and avoiding exposure to harsh chemicals can help maintain its appearance and minimize tarnishing.

2. How long does gold filled jewelry last vs. how long does gold plated jewelry last?

Gold filled jewelry's sturdiness outperforms gold plated jewelry thanks to its robust gold layer, providing greater protection against wear and tarnishing. With proper care, gold filled pieces can last for years or even decades, standing resilient against everyday use and exposure to moisture and chemicals.

In contrast, the thinner gold layer in gold plated jewelry makes it more prone to erosion, shortening its lifespan despite careful handling and occasional wear.

3. What is the best type of gold jewelry to buy?

Consider factors like durability, desired appearance, and budget to choose the best option for your needs

Solid gold jewelry is excellent for lasting value, while gold filled jewelry offers durability, and gold vermeil also offers some durability and aesthetics at more accessible price points.

4. How can I differentiate between types of gold jewelry?

Variations in color and durability distinguish different types of gold. 24K is bright yellow, while lower karats like 18k solid gold jewelry and 14k solid gold jewelry might have a paler hue due to alloyed metals.

5. I’m interested in investing in a fine jewelry piece. Does solid gold jewelry appreciate over time?

Solid gold jewelry holds the potential to increase in value over time due to its gold content. Gold's value changes based on market trends and global demand, impacting the price of solid gold jewelry, especially during uncertain economic periods. However, the extent of appreciation varies based on factors like gold purity, craftsmanship, brand reputation, and design uniqueness.

While higher karat purity pieces, such as 18K gold jewelry, might hold their value better, the rate of appreciation is influenced by external factors.
